    How Close to Two Dimensions Does a Lennard-Jones System Need to Be to Produce a Hexatic Phase?

    We report on a computer simulation study of a Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow slit pore with tunable attractive walls. In order to investigate how freezing in this system occurs, we perform an analysis using different order parameters. Although some of the parameters indicate that the system goes through a hexatic phase, other parameters do not. This shows that to be certain whether a system has a hexatic phase, one needs to study not only a large system, but also several order parameters to check all necessary properties. We find that the Binder cumulant is the most reliable one to prove the existence of a hexatic phase. We observe an intermediate hexatic phase only in a monolayer of particles confined such that the fluctuations in the positions perpendicular to the walls are less then 0.15 particle diameters, i. e. if the system is practically perfectly 2d

    Transport Coefficients of Gluon Plasma

    Transport coefficients of gluon plasma are calculated for a SU(3) pure gauge model by lattice QCD simulations on 163×816^3 \times 8 and 243×824^3 \times 8 lattices. Simulations are carried out at a slightly above the deconfinement transition temperature TcT_c, where a new state of matter is currently being pursued in RHIC experiments. Our results show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy is less than one and the bulk viscosity is consistent with zero in the region, 1.4T/Tc1.81.4 \leq T/T_c \leq 1.8 .Comment: 10 pages, Late

    Degree of randomness: numerical experiments for astrophysical signals

    Astrophysical and cosmological signals such as the cosmic microwave background radiation, as observed, typically contain contributions of different components, and their statistical properties can be used to distinguish one from the other. A method developed originally by Kolmogorov is involved for the study of astrophysical signals of randomness of various degrees. Numerical performed experiments based on the universality of Kolmogorov distribution and using a single scaling of the ratio of stochastic to regular components, reveal basic features in the behavior of generated signals also in terms of a critical value for that ratio, thus enable the application of this technique for various observational datasetsComment: 6 pages, 9 figures; Europhys.Letters; to match the published versio

    A method to construct refracting profiles

    We propose an original method for determining suitable refracting profiles between two media to solve two related problems: to produce a given wave front from a single point source after refraction at the refracting profile, and to focus a given wave front in a fixed point. These profiles are obtained as envelopes of specific families of Cartesian ovals.     Radiative and Collisional Energy Loss, and Photon-Tagged Jets at RHIC

    The suppression of single jets at high transverse momenta in a quark-gluon plasma is studied at RHIC energies, and the additional information provided by a photon tag is included. The energy loss of hard jets traversing through the medium is evaluated in the AMY formalism, by consistently taking into account the contributions from radiative events and from elastic collisions at leading order in the coupling. The strongly-interacting medium in these collisions is modelled with (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamics.     On the Classification of Quasihomogeneous Functions

    We give a criterion for the existence of a non-degenerate quasihomogeneous polynomial in a configuration, i.e. in the space of polynomials with a fixed set of weights, and clarify the relation of this criterion to the necessary condition derived from the formula for the Poincar\'e polynomial. We further prove finiteness of the number of configurations for a given value of the singularity index. For the value 3 of this index, which is of particular interest in string theory, a constructive version of this proof implies an algorithm for the calculation of all non-degenerate configurations.Comment: 12 page

    Investigation of double beta decay with the NEMO-3 detector

    The double beta decay experiment NEMO~3 has been taking data since February 2003. The aim of this experiment is to search for neutrinoless (0νββ0\nu\beta\beta) decay and investigate two neutrino double beta decay in seven different isotopically enriched samples (100^{100}Mo, 82^{82}Se, 48^{48}Ca, 96^{96}Zr, 116^{116}Cd, 130^{130}Te and 150^{150}Nd). After analysis of the data corresponding to 3.75 y, no evidence for 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta decay in the 100^{100}Mo and 82^{82}Se samples was found. The half-life limits at the 90% C.L. are 1.110241.1\cdot 10^{24} y and 3.610233.6\cdot 10^{23} y, respectively. Additionally for 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta decay the following limits at the 90% C.L. were obtained, >1.31022> 1.3 \cdot 10^{22} y for 48^{48}Ca, >9.21021> 9.2 \cdot 10^{21} y for 96^{96}Zr and >1.81022> 1.8 \cdot 10^{22} y for 150^{150}Nd.     Heterozygous mis-sense mutations in Prkcb as a critical determinant of anti-polysaccharide antibody formation

    To identify rate-limiting steps in T cell-independent type 2 (TI-2) antibody production against polysaccharide antigens, we performed a genome-wide screen by immunizing several hundred pedigrees of C57BL/6 mice segregating ENU-induced mis-sense mutations. Two independent mutations, Tilcara and Untied, were isolated that semi-dominantly diminished antibody against polysaccharide but not protein antigens. Both mutations resulted from single amino acid substitutions within the kinase domain of Protein Kinase C Beta (PKCβ). In Tilcara, a Ser552>Pro mutation occurred in helix G, in close proximity to a docking site for the inhibitory N-terminal pseudosubstrate domain of the enzyme, resulting in almost complete loss of active, autophosphorylated PKCβI whereas the amount of alternatively spliced PKCβII protein was not markedly reduced. Circulating B cell subsets were normal and acute responses to BCR-stimulation such as CD25 induction and initiation of DNA synthesis were only measurably diminished in Tilcara homozygotes, whereas the fraction of cells that had divided multiple times was decreased to an intermediate degree in heterozygotes. These results, coupled with evidence of numerous mis-sense PRKCB mutations in the human genome, identify Prkcb as a genetically sensitive step likely to contribute substantially to population variability in anti-polysaccharide antibody levels

    Poincar\'e recurrence theorem and the strong CP-problem

    The existence in the physical QCD vacuum of nonzero gluon condensates, such as , requires dominance of gluon fields with finite mean action density. This naturally allows any real number value for the unit ``topological charge'' qq characterising the fields approximating the gluon configurations which should dominate the QCD partition function. If qq is an irrational number then the critical values of the θ\theta parameter for which CP is spontaneously broken are dense in R\mathbb{R}, which provides for a mechanism of resolving the strong CP problem simultaneously with a correct implementation of UA(1)U_{\rm A}(1) symmetry. We present an explicit realisation of this mechanism within a QCD motivated domain model.
